Catacombs

The Catacombs are one of the greatest discoveries of early Christian times. They are a community Christian cemetery and they are located near the present village of Tripiti.
They were probably founded in the late second century AD, whilst burials continued until the end of the fifth century AD .These cemeteries sometimes were carved on the edge of the rocks like a square chamber, and sometimes where underground and built.
They were discovered by looters and came to light after their looting in 1840. The three catacombs together with five aisles and a burial chamber make a labyrinthine system with a present total length of 185 meters. The archaeologist Ross estimated that there must have been there more than 1,000 graves, many of which were family graves.
Apart from a cemetery, the catacombs were also a place of worship for Christians. Through these, the speed with which Christianity was spread in the island, is demonstrated.
